1. Overview

Card Maker is a fun and easy-to-use creative program designed to help teachers, therapists, and learners produce personalised cards, certificates, invites and greetings for any occasion.

The software enables users to design cards using text, photos, symbols, and clipart, with simple tools that are fully accessible via mouse, touchscreen, or switch. It’s ideal for learners of all abilities and promotes creativity, communication, and fine-motor skills in a meaningful context.

Use it to make birthday cards, thank-you notes, certificates of achievement, or classroom rewards - all fully printable and customisable.

2. Who is it for?

This software works well for:

  • Teachers and classroom staff supporting early writing and communication
  • Therapists / AT professionals using switch access or choice-making activities
  • Parents and carers helping children make cards for real-life events
  • Learners with SEND, including non-readers or those using switches

The program uses pictures, voice prompts, and very simple navigation.

3. Setting Up Card Maker (Teacher Setup)

Before learners start, you choose which options they will see.

1. Choose whether you are making:

  • Greetings Cards, or
  • Invitations (20 available occasions)

2. Choose up to four occasions

  • Card Maker includes 30 card occasions, but learners only see the four you select to keep things simple.

3. Choose picture style

  • You can select:
  • Colour cartoons
  • Black-and-white cartoons (good for colouring-in or learners with visual needs)
  • Photographs / illustrations
  • All styles (shows eight pictures, making choice-making harder)

4. Choose “Who is the card for?”

  • If your learner can type → select Type a name.
  • Otherwise → choose up to four names from a list you create (up to eight can be entered).
  • You may also record voice labels for auditory scanning using a microphone.

5. Choose “Who is the card from?”

Again, you can:

  • Let the learner type,
  • Offer up to four choices,
  • Use recorded audio, or
  • Allow the learner to take a webcam photo of themselves as the “from” item.

    4. Setting Up Access (Switch, Mouse, Touch)

    Card Maker supports:

    • Mouse and touchscreen
    • Interactive whiteboards
    • Single-switch scanning
    • Two-switch scanning

    Switch behaviours in Card Maker

    • Start scanning by pressing the switch
    • A scan box moves through all selectable items
    • Press the switch again (or “select” switch) to choose

    Switch Scanning Options

    You can adjust:

    • Scan speed (1–30 seconds per step)
    • Scan box colour (red, blue, black, green)
    • Auditory prompts for scanning or mouse-over

These options help learners who need extra visual or auditory support.

    5. Using Card Maker (step-by-step)
