Overview
Big Bang is a collection of visually stimulating activities created to develop early interaction and cause-and-effect understanding. Designed for learners with profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD), visual impairment, or limited motor control, Big Bang combines bold imagery, vibrant colours, and dynamic movement with engaging sounds and music to reward every interaction.
It’s ideal for use with a switch, touch screen, or pointing device, helping learners make the connection between their actions and what happens on screen. Big Bang encourages exploration, attention, and early communication - providing a foundation for more advanced learning and computer use.
The activities included in Big Bang support:
- Locating objects on the screen
- Fixing attention
- Tracking moving objects across/around the screen
Activities can run continuously or respond to a switch press. Images are clear and recognisable, offering opportunities for naming and language work. It works especially well when projected large in a sensory space.
Using Big Bang
Big Bang contains four activities. Each has a fixed sequence of animations or images, and many adjustable options.
1. Big Bang Actions
- A moving prompt appears first.
- A single switch press triggers a lively animation with sound/music.
- You can scroll through animations with left/right arrow keys.
- A number in the corner shows which animation is next.
2. Big Bang Builds
- Each switch press adds a new stage of a picture.
- After 3 presses, a reward animation plays.
- Arrow keys select which build to use.
- A number shows which animation is selected.
3. Big Bang Movements
- A character appears in its starting position.
- A switch press makes it move around the screen, leaving a trail.
- Trails flash before disappearing.
- Arrow keys select movement types.
4. Big Bang Colour
- Each switch press changes the screen colour.
- Each colour includes a sound effect.
- Includes a bubble‑tube‑style effect.
Adjusments and options
Press Esc during any activity to reach the Options screen. Each activity type provides slightly different menus.
Common Option Types
- Prompt on/off: Shows or hides the starting animation prompt.
- Switch Control: Set how long animations run or how presses are recognised.
- Repeat mode: Allows animations to loop until changed.
- Sound/Music: On or off.
- Delay: Adds a pre‑acceptance delay so brief accidental presses are ignored. Example: 0.3s means a press must last longer than 0.3s.
- Background colour: Adjust contrast.
