1. Overview

Big Bang Patterns is an expansion to the popular Big Bang series, designed to further develop visual attention, cause-and-effect understanding, and early control skills.

It features bold, dynamic moving patterns - spirals, waves, explosions, and abstract shapes - set to stimulating music and sound effects. The program is ideal for learners with profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD), visual impairments, or those at the earliest stages of interaction.

Big Bang Patterns can be used with a switch, touchscreen, keyboard or mouse, and offers a mesmerising sensory experience that rewards every action with movement and sound.

2. Who's it for?

Big Bang Patterns is suitable for:

  • Learners with profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD)
  • Learners at early cognitive levels
  • Learners with visual impairment (with careful colour choices)
  • Children and adults beginning switch access

Very young children may also find the animations motivating and engaging.

3 Starting the software

When the program opens:

  • You will see three activity choices.
  • Click an activity image to read a short description.
  • If you’ve used the program before, you can choose:

              Default settings, or

              Last used settings

If unsure, choose Default settings.

4. Ways learners can interact

Big Bang Patterns offers three main activity types.

1. Experiential Activity

  • Animations play automatically.
  • No input is required from the learner.
  • Designed to encourage looking, listening, and visual attention.

Good for:

  • Observation and engagement
  • Early assessment
  • Learners who are not yet ready to use switches

Tip: Watch closely for eye movement, stilling, or changes in expression. Try turning sound on or off to see what the learner responds to.

2. Cause and Effect Activity

  • The learner presses a switch (or space bar, mouse, touch screen).
  • Each press triggers an animation with sound or music.

Good for:

  • Early cause-and-effect learning
  • Introducing switch access

3. Picture Build Activity

  • The learner presses a switch several times.
  • Each press builds part of the picture.
  • When complete, the picture animates as a reward.

Good for:

  • Encouraging repeated actions
  • Simple sequencing

5 Activity controls

While an activity is playing:

  • Left / Right arrow keys: change the picture
  • Esc key: return to picture style screen
  • Home button: return to main menu
  • Exit button: close the program

    6. Adjustments & options

Each activity has an Options screen. These settings help you tailor the experience.

    Colour

    • Choose foreground and background colours.
    • High contrast colours can help learners with visual impairment.

Important: Do not choose the same colour for patterns and background, or the animation will disappear.

    Sequence

    • Choose whether animations:
Play one after another automatically, or
Stay on the same image until you change it
    • Optionally display the picture name on screen

    Delay (pre‑acceptance delay)

    • Ignores very brief switch presses.
    • Useful for learners with involuntary movements.

    Example:

    • A delay of 0.3 seconds means only longer presses are accepted.

    Action timing

    • Set how long each animation lasts.
    • Set how long the pause is between animations.

Cause and Effect – Action option

    You can choose:

    • One press starts the animation
    • Or:
           First press shows the picture
           Second press starts the animation

    Picture Build – Action option

    • Choose how many presses are needed to complete the picture.
    • Choose how long the final animation lasts.

    7. Music and sound

Big Bang Patterns includes built‑in music and sound effects.

You can also play your own MP3 music.

    Using your own music

    1. Open the Options menu.
    2. Select Use my own music.
    3. Click Search.
    4. Choose a folder containing MP3 files.
    5. Select which tracks to use.
    6. Click Save, then Play.

You can change the music selection at any time.

Tip: Familiar voices or favourite songs can be highly motivating.
