1. Overview
Big Bang Pictures is designed to help learners at the earliest stages of interaction develop cause-and-effect understanding, visual attention, and switch skills.
With bright, high-contrast images, captivating movement, and lively sound effects, Big Bang Pictures encourages users to explore and engage with the screen. Each activity rewards every press or touch with movement, colour, and sound - helping learners make the connection between their actions and the resulting effect.
It’s ideal for users with profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD), visual impairments, or limited motor control, and can be used with a switch, touchscreen, keyboard or mouse.
2. Who's it for?
Big Bang Pictures is suitable for:
- Learners with profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD)
- Learners with severe or complex needs
- Very young children exploring early cause and effect
- Learners developing visual attention skills
- Learners beginning single- or two-switch access
3. Starting the software
When Big Bang Pictures opens:
- You will see five activity choices.
- Click an activity picture to read its description.
- If you have used the software before, you can choose:
Default settings, or
Your previous settings.
4. Activity navigation buttons
On each activity screen you will see buttons to:
- View activity information
- Change options
- Start the activity
- Return Home
Before playing, you choose a picture style:
- Simple line drawings
- Silhouettes
- More detailed line drawings
Tip: You can change pictures at any time using the left and right arrow keys.
Stopping or exiting the activities
- Press Esc to return to picture style selection.
- Click Home to return to the activity menu.
- Click Exit from the Home screen to close the program.
5. Activities explained
1. Experiential activity
- Animations play automatically.
- No interaction is required.
- Designed for watching and responding.
Helpful ideas:
- Watch eye movement and facial responses.
- Try sound on and off to see what the learner responds to.
Options include:
- Picture and background colour
- Which pictures are included
- Fixed or manual sequence
- Showing picture names
- Animation length and pause time
2. Cause and Effect activity
- The learner presses a switch (or Space bar, mouse, or touch) to trigger an animation.
- Provides a clear, motivating reward.
Extra options:
- Pre‑acceptance delay – ignores very brief presses
- Single press or two-step press (show picture, then animate)
3. Picture Build activity
- The learner presses a switch multiple times.
- Each press builds part of the picture.
- When complete, the picture animates.
Options include:
- Number of presses required
- Animation length
This is useful for progressing switch skills.
4. Two Switch Play activity
- Requires two switches.
- One switch shows a picture.
- The other switch animates it.
Useful for:
- Early two-switch learning
- Reducing random or repeated pressing
Keyboard alternative:
- Space bar and Enter key
5. Choosing with Two Switches
- One picture is shown at a time.
- Switch 1 changes the picture.
- Switch 2 animates the chosen picture.
Tip: Start with a small number of pictures to support choice making.
6. Using your own music
You can play your own MP3 music instead of the built-in sounds.
This can be very motivating, especially familiar music or voices.
To add music:
- Open Options.
- Go to Music.
- Select Use my own music.
- Click Search.
- Choose a folder containing MP3 files.
- Select the tracks you want.
- Click Save, then Play.
7. Adjustments & options
You can adjust:
- Colours and contrast
- Picture complexity
- Number of pictures
- Animation length
- Pause duration
- Switch delay settings
- Music and sound
Tip: Make small changes and observe the learner’s response.
8. System requirements
- Compatible with: Windows: 7 / 8 / 10 / 11
- Activation key delivered by email
- MSI installer is available for site licence customers
