1. Overview
The JAZZ Joystick is a light-touch desktop joystick designed for learners who struggle with small, precise movements. It allows simple, gross movements to control either a computer cursor or switch scanning on AAC devices. The joystick only activates once pushed past a gentle movement threshold and gives an audible click to confirm that movement or scanning has begun.
Using Pretorian’s analogue technology (0.5N force), it provides both ease of movement and accurate control. You can switch between Mouse Mode and Switch Scanning Mode, adjust cursor speed, choose whether diagonals are allowed, set left-handed controls, use double-click or drag-lock functions, and turn the buzzer on or off.
The JAZZ Joystick works with PCs, Macs, Chromebooks, AAC systems, and with iPad/iPhone using a suitable USB adapter. Two handle options (T-Bar and Soft Ball) are included so you can pick the most comfortable grip.

- Click confirms that scanning has started.
- Buttons default to Switch 1, 2, 3 (or reversed when left-handed mode is active).
- Designed for scanning in grid-based AAC systems such as Grid 3.
9. Adjustments and Options
Settings are changed through Learn Mode.
Learn Mode behaves differently depending on whether the unit is currently in Mouse Mode or Switch Scanning Mode.
Entering Learn Mode
- Ensure you are in the correct mode for what you want to change.
- Hold the middle button until a warbling tone sounds.
- Make your changes.
- Hold the middle button again to save (warbling tone confirms).
If left for 1 minute with no changes, Learn Mode exits and discards changes.

Cursor Speed & SmartTrack:
To change the cursor speed setting, press the middle button briefly. Each time you do so, the unit emits a number of beeps according to the table below. There are four speed settings and you may also choose whether SmartTrack is on or off. The speed of the cursor changes immediately, allowing you to experiment until the best setting is found.
Beep patterns correspond to the speed table in the manual:

Left-handed operation
Press left button:
- 1 beep = right-handed
- 2 beeps = left-handed
Double-click
Press right button:
- 1 beep = right click
- 2 beeps = double-click
Diagonal Cursor Movement
Hold left button:
- Falling tone = diagonals OFF
- Rising tone = diagonals ON
Buzzer on/off
Hold right button:
- Falling tone = OFF
- Rising tone = ON
Switch Scanning Mode settings
- Left-handed operation (same as above)
- Diagonal scanning:
Falling tone = OFF
Rising tone = ON
- Buzzer on/off (same as above)
