Windows S Mode is a locked-down version of Windows designed to keep devices fast, secure, and easy to manage. It’s commonly used in schools and organisations because it limits what you can install and ensures everything comes from the Microsoft Store.
However, because of these restrictions, most software (including ours) cannot be installed while your device is in S Mode. This article explains what S Mode is, why you may need to switch it off, and how to do it safely.
What Is Windows S Mode?
Windows S Mode is a simplified, security-focused version of Windows. When a device is in S Mode:
- You can only install apps from the Microsoft Store
- You must use Microsoft Edge as the web browser
- You cannot install drivers or software from outside the Store
- Background processes are more restricted
- The system is harder to accidentally misconfigure or infect with malware
It’s designed to keep devices fast, safe, and consistent, especially for students or users who need a simplified experience.
Benefits of S Mode
✔ Stronger security - apps are store-verified
✔ Better performance - fewer background apps and system changes
✔ Longer battery life - ideal for laptops and tablets
✔ Reduced risk of unwanted software
✔ Simple and stable for new or vulnerable users
✖ No apps outside the Microsoft Store
✖ Can’t install traditional desktop software (.exe or .msi)
✖ Limited driver and USB device support
✖ Must use Microsoft Edge as the browser
✖ Some accessibility, assistive, and specialist software won’t work
Installing Inclusive Software
Our software isn’t available through the Microsoft Store and requires installation of components that S Mode does not permit. To install and run our programs correctly, your device must be switched to standard Windows mode.
Important: Switching out of S Mode is free, but it is permanent.
Once you leave S Mode, you cannot switch back.
How to Turn Off S Mode (Windows 10 & Windows 11)
Please follow the instructions on the Microsoft Support site to switch to the full version of Windows supplied with your computer:
Please note: there are separate instructions for Windows 10 and Windows 11.
Once completed, you will be able to install any software (including ours) as you would normally.
