Inclusive Recommends: Switch Tester

Troubleshooting switch issues

It can be difficult troubleshooting switch-related issues as the switch in isolation cannot easily be tested. It requires a second device to observe a potential issue.

For example, connecting the switch to a switch-adapted fan will help you observe whether or not something isn't working. But unless you have several switches and several switch-adapted toys/appliances for testing purposes, how do you determine which component is faulty?

Customers sometimes return both their switches and their toys for testing as they aren't able to confidently diagnose whether it is the switch or the toy at fault. But this deprives their child of much needed pleasure and stimulation.

The solution in this case would be a switch tester (such as the Test-IT! from Pretorian). This device will give you conclusive proof that a switch isn't performing as it should. A red light appears when a switch is connected, then pressing the switch should prompt a green light. If there is no green light, you can be confident there's a fault.

The Test-IT! is most valuable in diagnosing intermittent switch problems, such as a kink or small break in the cable causing signal drop-out. This would would otherwise be almost impossible to verify. Connect your switch to the Test-IT!, hold the switch down, then move the cable into different positions. If the green light flickers on and off, you know there is a cable problem interrupting normal operation. This removes the frustration and uncertainty of knowing why something isn't working as it should.

The switch tester and battery tester are two of the most important tools in our diagnostic arsenal.
